shovel01

All members of the community are welcome to go along to the Village Green at Elcot Lane on Monday 15th February, armed with a spade, to help plant trees and shrubs.

Trees and shrubs are being planted along the allotment fence line and around the pavilion building to improve the natural diversity and appearance of the Village Green, helped by funding from the Town Council and Area Board. Starts at 11 am and will probably continue until mid afternoon.

Macular Society gets a boost

Linda Chapman receives the chequeOn Thursday 28th January our Mayor visited Marlborough's Macular Support Group, a local self-help support group run for people with macular conditions where she presented a cheque for £500 to Group Leader, Linda Chapman. The group meets at the Wesley Hall on the last Thursday of each month from 1.30 - 3.30 pm and offers practical and emotional support to those suffering from various macular conditions included age-related macular degeneration - an eye condition that causes loss of central vision, usually in both eyes and is the largest cause of sight loss in the developed world.

Treasurer, Susan Lampard said "This is exciting and will help us carry on for a further 12 months". The grant, which was awarded by the Town Council under its Small Grants Scheme, will be used for visits, social activities and speakers. The group is currently looking for a new Secretary and other volunteers who would be willing to help organise activities and visits. If you are interested, please contact Linda Chapman on 01672 512471.

Boxing Club

Did you know that another sports opportunity Marlborough offers is a local boxing club? Marlborough Amateur Boxing Club, based at the Sports Pavilion at Elcot Lane, is leased from the Town Council and has been brought together by volunteers who applied for grants and refurbished the building to make it a fantastic facility for local people. It offers training for both seniors and juniors with qualified coaches, all at very reasonable rates and is affiliated to the UK Amateur Boxing Association (ABA). Possible solution to HGV problems in Silverless Street

Junction Green Herd Street
Residents and drivers will want to be aware of new arrangements being put in place to test out a solution to ongoing problems with HGVs attempting to use Silverless Street. This has often resulted in damage to buildings, particularly at the Kingsbury Street end.

Wiltshire Council has recently issued a traffic order which will apply "No Entry" signs to the A346 (Herd Street) entrance to Silverless Street. This will not make Silverless Street one way, and although drivers won't be able to turn into Silverless Street from the A346 they will still be able to exit the road at either end. This is likely to take effect from week commencing 8th February. Later, an "Unsuitable for HGVs" sign will be put up near the Town Hall in an attempt to discourage HGVs from using Kingsbury Street and then turning into Silverless Street. Read more...
