Wednesday 9th : The Union flag is flying proudly above Marlborough Town Hall today to celebrate our Queen’s 63 years on the throne making her Britain’s longest serving Monarch. She has surpassed Queen Victoria’s record of 63 years, seven months and two days. On day 23,226 of Her Majesty’s reign, we wish her many more.

At the Christmas Lights Switch-on former Mayoress, Mrs Jenny Smithers, was announced as Marlborough's Citizen of the Year. From a racing background, Jenny was born in Rockley and has lived in the Marlborough area all her life, spending huge amounts of her time volunteering to help those less fortunate than herself. From an early age and alongside raising her family and supporting her husband, Derek, as Town Mayor, she volunteered to help those with physical or learning difficulties. Most of us will know her for the non-stop work she has done for the last 20 years supporting Mencap in the roles of both Chair and Secretary. She's organised Christmas parties, summer events, cricket matches, skittles evenings and much more. She has fund raised endlessly to make the local branch of Mencap the thriving group it is today and one that so many rely on.
Our thanks go to all those who nominated Jenny and other worthy members of the community for this award. Our runners up were Andrew Barnett, longstanding Scout Master of the 2nd Marlborough Scouts, for his commitment to young people, and Anna Forbes, for her hard work and enthusiasm for Action for the River Kennet. Sadly, now deceased, nominations were also received for Richard Miles who dedicated so much of his time to the church and will be especially remembered by the children of St Mary's for the wonderful wood carvings he generously made for them at Christmas over the last few years.

A milestone has been reached this summer in our Grounds Team. Our Apprentice, Michael Haines (pictured, right), and Trainee Aaron Presley (centre) have received a symbolic tool of the trade - a fine pair of secateurs, presented by our Grounds & Estates Manager, Richard Beale (left). Michael passed his Horticultural Level 2 qualification at Wiltshire College, Lackham and Aaron, who is also a retained firefighter, has passed training courses in chainsaw use, strimming, highways signage and excavator operations. Michael recently gave a presentation to staff and Councillors giving an overview of his study course.
Congratulations go too to fellow team member Richard Jones who passed his Horticultural Level 1 qualification.
