Big Butterfly Count
Last weekend ARK held a Moth Night at Stonebridge on Saturday evening and on Sunday the Friends of the Old Ralway Path organised a butterfly walk just north of Ogbourne St George. Among other things they spotted some Ringlets and a rather spectacular stripey catterpillar (the Cinnabar moth).
If you missed out don't worry - the Big Butterfly Count is taking place July 17 - August 9. Organised by Butterfly Conservation, a bit like the RSPB's big bird count it allows us all to share information so they can keep an eye on the nation's butterfly population. You can register and pick up a form at http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/ where there are instructions and a form to use. There are 60 species of butterfly found in Britain and 2,500 species of moth – see how many you can spot.
July Cemetery Clean-Up
Volunteers are invited to come along and help the Mayor, Cllr. Margaret Rose, with her continuing clean-up of the Old Victorian Cemetery on The Common this weekend. The Friends of the Old Victorian Cemetery meet for Clean-Up Sundays once a month but this time we have an eye on preparing for the the judges from South West in Bloom, who will be in town on Tuesday 14th.
Taking place on Sunday morning (12th July), anyone interested in helping with the tidy up is invited to come along and get involved. It starts at 9.00 am and will go on until about 11.00. Meet by the entrance to the Old Cemetery on The Common.
Please wear suitable shoes and clothing and don't forget to bring some refreshments and your gardening gloves. We'll bring some tools along but if you have any gardening tools you can bring that would be a great help. Alice's Enchanted Family Picnic in Priory Gardens
What was it the Mad Hatter said? “There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery and danger!” He was right. That place was Priory Gardens on Sunday at Alice’s Enchanted Family Picnic hosted by our Mayor. No danger though, just lots of fun. Anna Friend and Marlborough Young Actors showed real talent, never stepping out of character during an afternoon packed with families and their young children. Excellent performances too from the Marlborough Academy of Dance and Drama. Marlborough’s young people have so much to offer.
Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard, both before and on the day, to make it such a magical event, and to everyone who came along. If you'd like us to post your photos, please send them to us at enquiries@marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk
Cooper's Meadow Site Meeting
Thank you to everyone who came along to the first User Group meeting last month.
There's a site meeting taking place on Wednesday 8th July in the Meadow at 2 pm (changed from 11 am). All welcome to come along.
A Minute to Remember
On the Town Hall steps and following a minute's silence at midday, the Town Mayor and her Chaplain, The Reverend Dr David Campbell, led Councillors, staff and the police in prayers to remember the victims of last week's attack in Tunisia.
Let's bloom the best we can!

For the second time, Marlborough has entered the regional competition - South West in Bloom. Judging Day is Tuesday, 14th July. Like last year, success will involve lots of community effort. Beautiful floral displays from businesses in and around the High Street, our wonderful public gardens and meadows and many special pockets of open space - there's so much to show off. There will be 2 volunteer days to help us work together towards making the town look as good as possible - Monday, 6th July and Monday. 13th July. Lots to do - not just gardening! We will meet at 10.00am at Priory Gardens on both days.
Alice's Enchanted Family Picnic
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Mayor is inviting families and children to Alice's Enchanted Family Picnic in Priory Gardens on Sunday 5th July between 11.00am - 2.00pm. Come along and enjoy music and dance from Marlborough Acadamy of Dance and Drama, street theatre from Marlborough Young Actors, face painting, arts and crafts - a real community event with something for everyone. Lots of Cheshire Cat smiles and regal cupcakes to enjoy. Wonder if we'll see any white rabbits?
Magna Carta Celebrations

Our Town Mayor, Councillor Margaret Rose, was honoured to be asked to lead Marlborough in a parade in Salisbury, home of one of the original Magna Carta documents, at an event on Monday 15th June to celebrate the 800th anniversary of its sealing. It was a stunning display featuring 18 larger than life rebel Barons representing Wiltshire's communities. Young people played an enormous part in the pageant with Scouts marching behind an imaginative banner and alongside Marlborough's Baron which had been designed by students at St John's Academy and was magnificent. Cllr. Rose said: "I was very proud to represent Marlborough as their Mayor and be part of this historic event. More in the Mayor's Blog and on Wiltshire
Cooper's Meadow User Group
The sheep have returned for their summer grazing in Cooper's Meadow, with a new grazing licence in place signed between Action for the River Kennet (ARK) and the Town Council.
If you use the meadow and have ideas about how it could be used in the future, please get involved with the new User Group, to run along similar lines to the well-established User Group for the Common.
The first meeting is taking place on Wednesday 24th June in the Town Hall at 1.30 pm - all welcome.
