Grant for Alzheimer's Support

On Friday, 11th September our Mayor, Councillor Mrs Margaret Rose, handed a cheque for £500 to Alzheimer's Support at it's carers meeting in Marlborough. This was grant funding from the Town Council towards the fabulous work this organisation does in Alzheimers SupportMarlborough and surrounding area. It's a small independant charity set up in 1991 and supports people with dementia and their family carers. The group runs its carer's group in Marlborough High Street and works closely with the local surgery and other agencies.

The Town Council runs a small grant scheme and there is still money remaining for this year’s allocation.  Criteria and an application form can be downloaded here. More information is  available at the Alzheimer's Support website: http://www.alzheimerswiltshire.org.uk.

Cooper's Meadow Working Party - Sept 2015

On Wednesday 9th September there was a working party in Cooper's Meadow. MTC and ARK joined forces with volunteers and Councillors, all working hard in the September sunshine to remove weeds and cut back vegetation, especially besides the leat at the back of the meadow. They've left plenty of habitat for wildlife and there's a little bit of ongoing work to tidy up which our Grounds team will pick up. Many thanks to everyone who lent a hand.

Recognition for green-fingered team

secateurs2

A milestone has been reached this summer in our Grounds Team. Our Apprentice, Michael Haines (pictured, right), and Trainee Aaron Presley (centre) have received a symbolic tool of the trade - a fine pair of secateurs, presented by our Grounds & Estates Manager, Richard Beale (left). Michael passed his Horticultural Level 2 qualification at Wiltshire College, Lackham and Aaron, who is also a retained firefighter, has passed training courses in chainsaw use, strimming, highways signage and excavator operations. Michael recently gave a presentation to staff and Councillors giving an overview of his study course.

Congratulations go too to fellow team member Richard Jones who passed his Horticultural Level 1 qualification.

Can you help support young people living in care?

WC Independent Visitor SchemeCan you help?

Volunteers are needed to visit, listen to and support young people who are living in care.  If you are a good listener, feel you understand young people's issues and interests and have some regular time to spare, why not give us a ring? This is a rewarding and responsible role and the opportunity to make a difference in a young person's life.

Wiltshire Council is committed to safeguarding children and all volunteers will require clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service. Training and ongoing support are all provided.

For more information please contact the Independant Visitor Scheme Manager on 01225 713934/07733 303124.

Work Experience with Marlborough Town Council

ellie1We recently had Ellie Jerome with us for a couple of days to get some experience of local government, as a taster for her future aspirations to study politics at university. It was a real delight to have her here and she got down to work straight away! Read her thoughts on the experience here: http://www.marlboroughtowncouncil.gov.uk/marlborough-town-council-news/1246-work-experience-with-mtc

Thank you St John's!

stjohnscrestscaptionedWe have A-level Art students from St John’s to thank for helping out with the refurbishment of our blue signs at the entrances to Marlborough.  Our Grounds Team took these down and have re-painted them and we asked Mike Harrison of the Art Department if he and his students could help us out with painting the crests.  They have done a great job in bringing these back to life.  Included in the project were Emma Beasley and Sophie Gibb.  Watch out for the re-vamped signs being returned to their rightful places soon.  Very many thanks to St John’s students.

Work Experience with Marlborough Town Council

Written by Ellie Jerome

ellie1

Being interested in studying politics further down the line, my recent work experience at the Marlborough Town Council offices was fantastic as it gave me the opportunity to see government working on a very local level. Truth be told I expected the offices to be a lot bigger than they are and a lot more formal, so the first thing that struck me was how friendly all of the staff are and what a lovely environment it is, both for the people who work there and for any visitors who come through the door.

After having a chat with Shelley, the town clerk, I spent the morning working on reception and finding out more about what goes on. Something that was immediately clear from sorting out the post and answering the phone was the huge diversity of things the council deals with: everything from Marlborough in Bloom certificates to cemetery records to planning applications.

On my second day I went for a tour of the areas the council looks after with Richard, the grounds and estates manager. I was surprised by just how much Richard and his teams of seven men are responsible for around the town. Another thing that was interesting was to see was the difference between what the town council is responsible for and what Wiltshire County Council is responsible for. It seemed almost nonsensical at times – for example Richard pointed out one grass verge that the Town Council were responsible for and then explained that the next verge along was actually the responsibility of Wiltshire Council. My confusion in understanding what is looked after by Wiltshire Council and what is looked after by the Town Council seems to be shared by some townspeople as well, as several times I had to refer callers over to Wiltshire Council for their enquiries.

After lunch I sat in on a briefing meeting between the mayor, Councillor Margaret Rose, and the town clerk before the full town council meeting, taking place in the evening and that evening I attended the full town council meeting in the Town Hall. The deep-rooted tradition of Marlborough Council was evident from the Mayor’s regal ‘throne’, the photos of past Mayors going back over 100 years adorning the walls, the mace from 1652, and the prayers that started off the meeting. The meeting was soon underway and the agenda was efficiently addressed and discussed, several points marked by bursts of debate between the councillors before voting on the issues. Although it’s supposedly an apolitical council, the differing shades of politics were sometimes apparent and there was certainly some heated debate.

I’d like to end by saying a big thank you to Shelley, Dawn, Linda, Sue, Richard and everyone else at Marlborough Town Council for making me feel welcome and for making my experience an interesting and enjoyable one.
