We were delighted to welcome Karla Jackson, a Year 10 student at St John's Academy, who spent a week with us in July 2016. She used a variety of skills in her short time with us working alongside our staff, learning about the way a small local authority works. She toured the town visiting the parks, play areas, cemeteries and other open spaces within the Town Council's responsibilities. Karla also archived some historic documents and took photographs of the upper floors of the Town Hall and even took minutes at a meeting. Thank you for your help, Karla. We wish you well in your studies and future career.

On Sunday 12th June, Marlborough marked the Queen's 90th birthday at a well-attended Civic Service at St Mary's Church followed by celebrations at the Town Hall.
It was all arranged between Churches Together and the Town Council with a focus on the Queen as well as reflecting on how the town has changed during those 90 years. Lots of local community groups went along as well as the Mayor, his fellow Councillors, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Richard Handover CBE and Town Mayors from across Wiltshire and Berkshire. At a bunting-clad Town Hall after the service, everyone raised a glass of Bucks Fizz and gave three cheers for the Queen led by our new Town Cryer, Mike Tupman. Our Mayor, Cllr Noel Barrett-Morton took our first group selfie to commemorate the occasion! Read the full story here
The event included an exhibition of some of the events of the last 90 years in Marlborough. If you didn't get a chance to come along on the day, some of this material is now on display in St Mary's church, along with copies of The Servant Queen as a small memento.

Marlborough History Society has been asked by the Headteacher of St Peter’s Junior School, Mrs Caroline Spindlow, to help with a memoir that the pupils of the school are doing. St Peter’s is amalgamating with St Mary’s this year and will be moving into a new building in 2017. The new school will be known as Marlborough St Mary’s, so the name, as well as the building, will pass into history. Mrs Spindlow is asking if the History Society could help with memoirs, photographs and memorabilia. St Peter’s moved into its present building, the old Grammar School, in the 1970’s from its previous location in what is now the Library. Up until the 1970’s St Peter’s was a boys only school, for Years 3 to 6.
Please contact the Secretary of the History Society, Mervyn Hall or David Chandler, Committee member if you think you could help. Mervyn Hall 01672 511463 / mervynjh@aol.com and David Chandler 01672 511495 /davidchandler573@btinternet.com
