Councillor Andrew Ross
Thank you for your serviceAt the Annual Town Meeting on Monday, 28 April we said goodbye to Councillor Andrew Ross, who stood down from the Town Council at the end of this municipal year.
Elected after a by election in 2004 Councillor Ross has served his community for over 20 years: he was made Town Mayor in 2010 and chaired the Finance & Policy Committee for many years. He gave his time generously and freely (all Town Councillors are unpaid volunteers).
Passionate about providing sport and leisure facilities especially for young people, Councillor Ross was instrumental in the creation of the skate park at the Recreation Ground and is a strong supporter of our sports teams, especially Marlborough Rugby; indeed, it is thanks to him and other like-minded people that we have a thriving sports forum in the town.
Other interests include history, and in particular military history. As well as being a strong supporter of The Merchant's House, Councillor Ross has been personally involved in our military commemorations and civic working party. For example, he researched and scripted a Roll of Honour event at the Town Hall to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War, and he is always present at Remembrance events. When the Mayor lays poppies on Commonwealth and other war graves on Armistice Day, it is Andy Ross who brings each of the fallen to life, introducing each person, explaining their background, family members, connection to the town, military service and the circumstances of their death.
On Monday evening, the Mayor thanked Councillor Ross for his long service and presented him with parting gifts from fellow Councillors and staff.
Thanking the Mayor for her kind words, Andy thanked fellow Councillors, several Town Clerks and all the staff who had supported him, especially paying tribute to Office Manager Sue Fry. He reminded everyone that sport had been played at Marlborough Common - pretty much the only flat land in the parish - since the Hockey Club played there in 1932, and he urged Councillors to make it easy for sports clubs to continue to thrive in Marlborough.
" Andy Ross was instrumental over many years in ensuring the Council moved from a fragile financial position to a sustainable one. As such this has meant the Council has been able to provide the services it does to the community. The Marlborough community is indebted to him for his efforts and diligence." Richard Spencer-Williams, Town Clerk
Thank you, Andy. You've contributed a great deal to this town and we will miss you. We wish you a long and happy retirement.
