Battle of Marlborough
The battle lines will be drawn, the troops will be mustered and the Battle of Marlborough will commence on the town’s Common over the weekend of 26/27July. The Town Council is working with the English Civil War Society to stage a re-enactment of the civil war battle which will recreate the events of 1642 on the original site of the action. Marlborough’s defending Parliamentary soldiers supported Parliament against King Charles and his Royalist troops. It was a dramatic and difficult time which saw the town burned and ransacked.
The weekend will offer everyone a chance to learn more about life in the 17th century. Just off the High Street in Priory Gardens, a Living History exhibition will take place over both days where visitors can wander through the site discovering civilian and domestic life which will show artisans, traders and craftspeople of the time.
Over the last few weeks the English Civil War Society has been visiting local schools to teach them more about the Civil War and how it was for the townspeople of Marlborough in 1642 and will also be presenting lectures during the Summer School at Marlborough College.
