Spring Study Series – ‘Elizabethan England’
April 1 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
£16.00 – £19.00
The second of three compelling lectures on Elizabethan England at The Merchant’s House with David Evans.
The Protestant Reformation dealt a serious blow to the visual arts in England. Henceforth, artists in England could make a living only from painting portraits. Surprisingly, despite this, painting in the Elizabethan era was varied. With the Virgin Mary ruled out as a subject, the Queen could be depicted as, in effect, a goddess. At the Queen’s court, the art of the miniature flourished: the greatest native painter of the age was the miniaturist Nicholas Hilliard.
