Hi Marlborough and Manton,

A family group - an older man and woman and a younger man wearing a councillor's robeI would like to begin by thanking the people of Marlborough and Manton for their kind words, thoughts and cards of sympathy following my father’s death on the 22nd of June. My father had been seriously ill for the last year of his life and, as you can imagine, the last year and the weeks that followed his death have been pretty tough for me and my family.  But the warmth and kindness that the people of Marlborough and Manton have shown towards us have provided a great deal of comfort and have helped keep us going.

I had the great honour yesterday, (the 15th of August) of laying the wreath at the cenotaph on New Road on behalf of the town to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ day and to thank those brave men and women for their courage and sacrifice of which we will always remember. It was also the first time that I got to wear the famous red gown and chain of office that the Mayor wears on important occasions.  I must admit it was really nice to wear the famous gown and it reminded me how proud and privileged I am to be the Mayor of the town I love. My father, Uncle and Great Uncle have been past Mayors of Marlborough so it felt very special to wear the gown that they have worn over the years!

I am also looking forward to the official opening, on the 2nd of September, of the new play area in the Jubilee Field in Manton. As a resident of the village since 1981, I have spent 100s of hours playing in the Rec (as it was then known) so it will be very special to see the new play area opened. In fact, one of my greatest claims to fame took place there - winning the 1985 Preshute Primary School 400 hundred metres race, although my cousin claims I only won it because he had broken his wrist and couldn't take part! Huge thanks goes to the Manton Community Outdoors group, Manton Residents Association and the people of Manton who all came together, worked together and compromised together to produce a brilliant playground that generations of children in Manton and Marlborough will love.

town-councillor-vacancy-2020I love being a Town Councillor – it’s interesting, challenging at times, but so rewarding.  I’m meeting such interesting and inspiring people and I’m able to play a part in helping the community and town I love. I thoroughly recommend it and encourage anyone who thinks they may like to be a Councillor to get in touch with our Town Clerk about the vacant position that we have for a new Town Councillor for Marlborough's East Ward. Co-option will take place on the 7th of September.  So, if you fancy it, put your name forward.

Take care Marlborough and Manton and speak soon.

 Thank you

 Mark
