The second half of the eighteenth century saw
significant developments for Britain both at home
and abroad which could be said to have laid the foundations
of British greatness in the one hundred years that followed.

Painting in Challenging times
The talk examines the reflection in the art of the time of
British success in the Seven Years War, the crisis brought
about by defeat in America and the attack on slavery and recovery in the early 19th century as the slave trade was abolished and the challenge of Napoleonic France was beaten off.
Wednesday 30th March: Christopher Rogers Arcadian England: an Age of Opulence
The Seven Years War and the consequent emergence of the first British Empire had an immense impact on ‘taste’.
Furthermore the burgeoning agricultural and industrial revolutions provided the architect with new patrons and great disposable wealth.
